Chih-Chien Wang

My practice dedicates to a process for the approximation of understanding reality ranging from the construction of meanings, identities, memories and emotions yet examining the essence of art making. Such process is to look for ways to define but not to result in conclusion, and it suggests multiple attempts rather than fixed strategies to introduce specific experience, which might somehow be best realized during the process of constructing the work. Such experience reflects both the approximation and the embodiment of the personal search even though the subjects might come from banality and seemingly insignificant fragments of personal life. I use mostly photography, video, objects or texts and sometimes integrate performance and audio in my work.

I was born in Taiwan and have lived in MontrĂ©al since 2002, where I have completed a master’s degree in the Photography Program, Department of Studio Arts, at Concordia University following studies in cinema and theatre at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan. I am currently doing a one-year residency in 2016 at the KĂĽnstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. My work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at venues such as the Art Gallery of Mississauga (2015), the Darling Foundry in MontrĂ©al (2015), Pierre-François Ouellet Art Contemporain in MontrĂ©al (2014), the MusĂ©e rĂ©gional de Rimouski (2013), the MontrĂ©al Museum of Fine Arts (2012), and has been in group shows including the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, The Quebec Triennial at the MusĂ©e d’art contemporain de MontrĂ©al, the National Gallery of Canada, Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery in MontrĂ©al, Zenith Gallery in Beijing, Aperture in New York, MusĂ©e de l’ElysĂ©e in Lausanne, Switzerland.
